Chapter Fifteen
Lorena
We find a cute Italian place on the corner of a picturesque street, an hour and thirty minutes outside of the city. Itâs the sort of place I can imagine moving to one day, with Lukas and our growing family, walking down the wide Main Street with our baby cradled to my chest.
Lukas has his hand on the small of my back as we enter the restaurant. Itâs cozy in here, with landscape paintings on the walls and soft lamps shining over the tables. The hostess leads us to a table in the corner, the restaurant is mostly empty except for an elderly couple and a man reading the newspaper.
I canât help but smile when Lukas pulls my chair out for me, tucking it in behind me.
âYour waiter will be over shortly,â the hostess says. âIn the meantime, would you like anything to drink?â
âIâll just take an orange soda, please,â I say.
Lukas nods. âSounds good to me. Two of those, please.â
The hostess leaves us and Lukas smirks over at me. He looks as handsome as always.
âI canât believe Iâm on a date with Lukas Landon.â
He chuckles. âYou say that like Iâm a celebrity.â
âWell, you were, once upon a time.â
He shrugs. âI had some minor fame from my boxing career, itâs true, but I was never a superstar. Honestly, I preferred it that way. I was able to make some decent cash without giving away my privacy.â
âDo you miss it?â I ask.
He shakes his head. âNo, honestly. I loved boxing when I was a teenager and a younger man, but Iâm happy I got out when I did. People said I was crazy for retiring at thirty, but I was already feeling the effects of all those punches to the head. So I got out, used my money to start a business, and here we are.â
I smile. âHere we are. But I didnât say it because youâre a celebrity.â
I close my mouth once the words escape me. I didnât plan on saying that.
The waiter gives me a good reason to keep my mouth firmly shut as he places our drinks down. After Lukas says weâll need a few minutes to look over the menus, he turns to me, his stark eyes feeling like theyâre pinning me in place.
âSo how did you mean it, eh?â
I grab my glass and take a long sip of my soda, placing it down with a shaky smile. âHmm, delicious.â
His smirk widens as he leans forward. âWhy do I feel like thereâs something youâre not telling me?â
âItâs nothing, really.â
I wish my cheeks would stop betraying me, as a fierce blush lights them up.
âOkay, if you say so.â He leans back and watches me, with that captivating smirk on his face, seeing through my lie with ease. âBut if you want to tell meâ¦â
âItâs not a big deal.â My words come out in a rush, almost tripping over each other. âBut basically, in high school, I guess you could say I had a bit of a crush on you.
